After the recent publication of its 2016 Q1 report, VisionMobile is already gathering data for the next report, which will cover the languages and tools we are across six sectors mobile, cloud, desktop, IoT, machine learning, and AR/VR.  The more developers take part, the more complete the information we'll have about the State of the Developer Nation.

This is VisionMobile's 11th developer survey and it’s entitled Developer Tools Benchmarking. It includes questions on topics like programming languages, platforms, app categories, tool categories, revenue models, IoT verticals - and, of course - tools! It’s a survey made by developers, for developers - so the questions are very relevant!

One incentive for contributing to the research is to get feedback about you how your answers compare you to other developers in your country by way of a custom scorecard and to receive a free report with its findings.

Obviously reaching as many developers as possible is important to VisionMobile, which had almost 22,000 respondents to its previous survey, the 10th in its biennial series. To encourage you to complete the survey, which takes around 10 to 20 minutes depending on how many of the development categories you are involved in, there's a prize draw with prizes including an iPhone 6s, an Xperia Z5, a Nexus 6P, and more. Although you can only enter the survey once and only claim a single prize, your email can be entered in the prize draw up to six times. This is because the survey has separate sections on mobile, IoT, desktop, machine learning, augmented/virtual reality, and backend software.

Further rewards are available to members of Vision Mobile's Developer Panel. By joining this panel you agree to being contacted regarding this and future surveys. In addition to having their emails entered into the General Prize draw, panelists will also be entered into a separated Panel Prize Draw. In addition they earn 100 points for the current survey plus 100 points for any of Vision Mobile's previous surveys completed with the same email address. Once you've accumulated 500 points you can convert 200 points to an $10 Amazon Gift Card. Panelists can also participate in a Referral Program to recruit more respondents with BitCoin rewards.

We've already reported on some of the findings of VisionMobile's Q1 2016 report but since languages are a main focus of the new survey this graphic sums up some of its language-related findings:

In this chart the red bars depict the latest data, for Q1 2016 while the blue bars refer to data from the previous year, Q1 2015. The total bar represents the overall prevalence of each language while the dark segment shows how many devs use it as their primary language. So for mobile, HTML5 is now used by 66% of devs, closely followed by JavaScript/TypeScript/CoffeeScript. Both of these had increased slightly in popularity since the previous year. Despite the fact that it had lost some of its mindshare since 2015, Java remained as the most popular primary language, but with only 22% in 2016 rather than the previous 29%. By contrast Java had increased in popularity for Cloud development, having a 66% of total mindshare and 23% using it as their primary language in 2016. PHP, which in 2015 had been equally popular as Java (38% mindshare/13% primary) had also become more popular by 2016 with 52% of devs using it and 18% using it as their primary language.

At last ISO C23 has been published, but at $250 you probably aren't going to read it. Can we really tolerate this sort of profiteering on the work of others? This is worse than academic publishing!
