Even Adobe Is Giving Up On Flash

Perhaps the headline is a little unfair, but Adobe is making it very clear that the future lies elsewhere and this degree of clarity should be applauded.

Flash became the environment everyone loved to hate.

You can't help think that there was something irrational in the reaction. Perhaps it was because Steve Jobs wouldn't let it on iOS - his "Thoughts on Flash" still makes interesting reading.

Yes, it was buggy, it was slow, it was a battery drainer and so on, but this is software. We normally complain about software and then expect its programmers to put it right. In this case users and programmers effectively wiped it from the earth.

There is a lot of sense in moving to HTML 5, but Flash was a complete ecosystem and a lot of programmers had a lot invested in the technology. Adobe isn't pulling out of Flash, it is are dropping the name.

The latest version of Flash Professional is now called Adobe Animate CC. It will continue to support the SWF and AIR formats, but it will also output in standard formats like SVG, Canvas and WebGL.

The blog post announcing the new version is titled:

"Welcome Adobe Animate CC, a new era for Flash Professional"

You can see some of the highlights of Animate CC in the following video:

The real question is, if you are using an Animation tool that really doesn't much depend on the Flash technology any more and doesn't even want to use the name, are you still a "Flash" professional?

"The entire team is thrilled about our upcoming release, and more importantly, beginning a new era with Animate CC. As we approach the 20th anniversary of Flash Professional, we invite animators and interactive designers around the world to join us for decades to come."

There are certainly lots of Flash programmers who will not be joining at all, let alone for decades to come.
