NFC For Man's Best Friend

Barclalycard has unveiled plans for PayWag, a payment chip that is discretely embedded into a dog's collar to allow it make small purchases. Does it mean you can stay in bed while the dog collects, and pays for, the newspaper?

We have got used to paying for things with our smartphones or by simply waving our credit cards in the vicinity of an nfc (near field communications) receiver. Now Barclaycard has come up with an extension of the contactless payment idea that will give dogs a degree of economic freedom. It's a payment chip that fits inside the dog's collar that can be used in just the same way.

Here's the You Tube video outlining the plan:

We asked Brash, the only dog on the I-Programmer team for his opinion.  He thought it was a "great idea" and started planning a shopping trip that took in the butcher's, the baker's and the dog-treat makers, plus a clandestine early morning visit to the all-night burger bar - until we pointed out it would show up on his statement.

The office cats were dismissive of the idea that they too could wear collars and earn spending money. "We don't do work" said Blofeld, we just come here because it suits us.

"And the petshop has already banned us anyway, cos of the carnage" added Mr Big, so, what could we ever want to buy?

What of pet owners?

Yes, the benefits outlined in the video appealed to them and they were able to think of additional ones such as being able to stop off for a donut or a beer while walking the dog - after all  exercise does make you crave food and drink.
