Robowow - Mows, Vacs And Cleans Your Pool

This is the time of the domestic robots, but they aren't like Rosie from the Jetsons. They aren't general purpose machines but are specialized to one task. Now Robomow has a robot that does three domestic tasks.

One has to say that it doesn't necessarily do any of them particularly well just yet, but it is early days.

"It's no secret that creating Robowow proved to be just a bit of a challenge. After all, it's not every day you create a robot that can do almost everything but make the coffee.

From carpet challenges to pool-side shenanigans and minor mowing misdemeanors, we certainly had our work cut out for us! But, in true Robomow style, with a lot of perseverance and a little luck, we went ahead to create the most advanced, domesticated robot ever made."

The video shows some of the problems and the solutions the team found:

Don't you just love the wire cable approach to getting out the pool - simply genius. And the solution to the stairs - why didn't I think of that.

"Now, all that's left is for you to sit back and relax while Robowow... does it all for you."

"In the very near future, there will be a Robowow in every home"

Well - not likely. I wouldn't let it rampage around my house and I have a real RoboMow working on my lawn as I write. It's a great piece of kit and it is very good at the one job it does very well. It doesn't manage to cut the lawn in a single pass but uses the domestic robot's advantage - it just keeps going. Over time it slowly but certainly covers every bit of the lawn, just like my Roomba covers every bit of the carpet - and without accidently switching modes and cutting a swathe through its wool pile.

April Fools joke this might be, but it does highlight why we are in the age of the specialist robot.

And oh yes - no matter how much you might actually want one - I'm fairly sure that not only does RoboWow not exist - it will never exist.
