Apple Leading In the Mobile Enterprise

Gaps are widening between the attractiveness of iPhone, Android and Windows Phone 7, according to a recent survey of developers, and Apple is clearly seen as dominating in the mobile enterprise.

The latest Mobile Developer Report from IDC and Appcelerator shows that fewer developers are thinking of creating apps for Windows phones from Nokia. The developers saying they were “very interested” in developing for WP7 dropped from 37 percent in Q1 this year to just 25 percent in Q2. The report concludes that this was not unexpected given disappointing WP7 handset sales to date.

The report also found that most developers believe that Apple iOS will be the eventual winner in the iOS/Android battle. 53% of developers think iOS will win as opposed to 37% who think Android will win. This is a big change in a short time. When asked the same question in Q3 2011, developers were split evenly at 44% each for Android and iOS.

While developers think iOS will be the eventual winner, the news for Google is better in the short term. Recent Appcelerator Mobile Developer Reports have shown developer interest in Android falling, but this trend has been arrested in the current report. The growth in Android devices and their increasing affordability has made the market more attractive. There’s some good news for Microsoft, too, as the report shows developers to be cautiously optimistic about Windows 8 tablets, with 33.3 percent of developers saying that they are very interested in Windows 8 tablets.

Appcelerator and IDC surveyed 3,632 Appcelerator Titanium developers from May 11-18, 2012 on their plans and development priorities.
