Recent research from Nielsen has come up with some interesting insights about app usage including the fact that only 6% of time spent using Androids is for phone calls.

According to figures collected by Nielsen in Q3 of 2011 in the U.S. the ratio of smartphones to feature phones is now  43% to 57% and Android has 43% of the smartphone market compared to iPhone's 28%.

Statistics collected from Smartphone and tablet users in the same period show that 68% of them had downloaded games in the month prior to the survey and 45% had downloaded each of music, mapping and social networking apps.

Although only a minority had downloaded only paid for apps a high proportion claimed to have downloaded both free and paid for apps in each of the thirteen app categories.

The finding that 51% of app consumers will put up with advertising on their devices if content is free also suggests that there are additional ways to monetize apps.

Nielsen's Monthly Breakdown of Time Spent on Android devices during September 2011 is also good news for App developers. The diagram above accounts for under half the time and the other 53% is devoted to apps. Another finding from the September Smartphone Analytics, which relies on device metering, is that on average app downloaders have 33 apps on their phones.
