Help Choose Next EE4J Name

The renaming of Java EE is going to be decided by a public vote to choose between two options - 'Jakarta EE' and 'Enterprise Profile'. The need for renaming has been forced on the community by Oracle's refusal to allow the use of 'Java' as part of the name.

The problem with what to call Java EE has arisen because while Oracle has handed over the open source version of Java to the Eclipse Foundation, Oracle says that the names 'Java' and 'javax' aren't part of the handover. At the moment, the platform based on Java EE 8 is an Eclipse Top Level Charter project, and is known as Eclipse Enterprise for Java (EE4J).

The Java EE Guardians and the developer community originally wanted the name Java to be kept somewhere in the brand, but have now settled on the two alternatives of Jakarta EE and Enterprise Profile.

Writing on the eclipse-ee4j area of Github, Wayne Beaton of the Eclipse Foundation said:

"The EE4J PMC considered numerous factors, but in the end the selection process effectively boiled down to identifying those names from the suggestions that the Eclipse Foundation can register and hold as a trademark on behalf of the community."

The name Jakarta EE is owned by the Apache Software Foundation, who have agreed a potential handover.

Beaton continued in the blog post:

"Since we ended up with only two names, the use of a weighted poll is unnecessary, and so we're taking this forward with a simple "pick your favourite of the two" poll."

The poll requires that you log in with a Google Account, but the form doesn't capture your identity.

In a blog post on Life at Eclipse, Mike Milinkovich, Executive Director of the Eclipse Foundation said that the choice of potential names had been strongly influenced by the need to choose a name that would be useable around the world.  Milinkovich also gave details of the current progress on moving Java EE to Eclipse, saying:

"the code is moving from the existing Oracle-led Java EE organization on GitHub into EE4J. The first nine projects which were proposed have all been created and provisioned, and the code is being moved into them as we speak. The next step on this front will be to propose the next round of projects to move next. As I understand it, the Oracle team will be proposing the JSON-B API and JavaMail projects next. Soon after will come JAX-B, JAX-WS,  JSTL,  UEL,  JAF,  Security,  JTA,  Enterprise Management, Concurrency, and Common Annotations."

The poll is open until Friday 23rd February 2018.
