Compete To Win $50,000 With RealSense SDK

Intel has made its RealSense SDK available for download. This could be the impetus you need to come up with an idea for the the App Challenge in time for the October 1st deadline.

Last year's Grand Prize winner of the Intel Perceptual Computing Challenge was Shunsuke Nakamura with Kagura,  a music app that allows users to play drums and cymbals and record their own voice to use as an instrument all through gesture. You can see the demo that won $50,000 in this video.

The other winning entries are included in this video from Intel:

Since last year Intel has improved on its perceptual computing SDK and has also made advances with the camera it works with. The resulting technology is called RealSense and Intel is asking developers to come up with apps that have the ability to see, hear and respond to the environment, with prizes totalling $1,000,000.

The deadline for the Ideation Phase of the Intel RealSense App Challenge is 11.59 UTC October 1st, 2014 - however you don't have to get a working app by then. All you need is the name for you project and the germ of an idea, enough to fill in a short box with a rough outline - about 50 words but you can write more if you want to.  You also need to provide a short explanation of how your app will use the RealSense SDK in very general terms.

You may be wondering "How can I come up with the idea without the SDK?".

The good news is that you can now download the SDK and there's a Product Brief (pdf) that provides a detailed description of its capabilities. With the help of these two new resources you should be able to work out how hard it will be to implement your idea - but remember you don't need to do it just yet.

If you want the camera that completes the Development Kit there are 1000 of them to be sent out to the developers with the most promising sounding ideas.

The idea can come from an individual or from a team - but only the team leader has to register at this stage.

This is an exciting contest and to be part of the first step is to register, and register your idea. All it takes is around 5 minutes but it needs to be before the October 1st deadline to be in with a chance of receiving the Intel RealSense Developer Kit for free. That is scheduled to happen in early December 2014 and recipients will have until mid-February 2015 to create a demo of their app.finalrealsensesq
