Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference sold out in under two minutes. Apple has now announced that video of all the conference sessions will be made available during the event and that a Tech Talks roadshow is being planned.
Tickets for WWDC 2013, which takes place at Moscone West in San Francisco from June 10 to 14, went on sale at 10:00 AM PDT on April 25 and sold out in a record time. This continues, or rather accelerates, a trend: in 2010 the event sold out in 8 days, in 2011 it was down to 12 hours, in 2012 it took two hours. If the trend continues the tickets will soon be selling out the month before they go on sale.
The reason for the step change was that Apple had provided advance notice of when tickets would be put on sale and this led to a virtual crush of would-be attendees attempting to buy tickets costing $1,599 and only the most nimble-fingered succeeding in doing so. Why is such a popular event so limited in size? A feature of the event is its hands-on labs and the opportunity for attendees to engage directly with Apple engineers and this is the restricting factor. It wasn't just Apple developers who were shocked at how quickly the allocation of 5,000 tickets was exhausted. Apple, it seems, was also taken aback and released a further, presumably small, set of tickets which it offered to some of those who had been in the process of making a purchase but couldn't complete it before the limit was reached. Apple has also announced that up to 150 tickets will be awarded to "creative, talented, and outstanding student developers". Students, who are 13 or older and a member of an iOS Developer program, can compete for WWDC 2013 Student Scholarships between Monday April 29 and Thursday May 2 at 5:00PM by submitting an app written in Objective-C and answer essay questions. Whereas in the past videos of WWDC have appeared day, weeks or even months after the event, Apple has responded to what it describes as "unprecedented interest" in this year's by announcing: For those who can’t join us in San Francisco, you can still take advantage of great WWDC content, as we’ll be posting videos of all our sessions during the conference. The announcement concludes: We’ll also be hitting the road this fall with Tech Talks in a city near you. which will give some Apple Developers something to look forward to.
