Ubi Interactive has created a system that uses a projector in combination with a Kinect to create a virtual touchscreen that can be displayed on any flat surface. It is now going commercial as a Windows 8 app. Ubi, a Munich-based start-up was one of the eleven companies selected to take part in last year's three-month Microsoft Kinect Accelerator program and the result of its close collaboration with Microsoft is software that can give you a giant touchscreen for a modest outlay. The elements of the solution are a projector, something that most businesses already own, a Kinect sensor, and the software, costing $149 for the basic version that offers one touch point, a display size of 45 inches and comes with only online forum support. If you want a larger display, the one-touch point version is $379, the two-touch point version is $799, both with e-mail support, and if you want 20 touch points and phone support the price tag is $1499. In a guest post on the Kinect blog, Ubi Interactive's co-founder and CEO gives examples of how the system has been used by its pre-launch customers. A major construction company found it the ideal solution to display blueprints and a US university put it in the hands of architecture students, allowing them to present their thesis projects as interactive displays. He reports that several Fortune 500 enterprises, mentioning Microsoft and Intel, are using the software in their conference rooms. He also suggests several other uses:
This promo video shows the system in action and it does backup Chanoth's claim that "the possibilities are endless.
