Further Update for Kinect Developer Toolkit
Written by Ian Elliot

Microsoft has released an update to the Kinect Developer Toolkit. It includes a sample for DirectX 11 interoperability with WPF and fixes a known issue with Kinect Studio playback.

There is one new feature in the V1.5.2 Toolkit Release:

  • WPFD3Dinterop. This new sample demonstrates DirectX 11 interoperability with Windows Presentation Foundation (WPF), which enables powerful DirectX rendering composed with quicker-to-develop WPF user interfaces.

There is also a worthwhile bug fix:

  • Improved Kinect Studio playback. This fixes a known issue from version 1.5.1 of Kinect Studio to ensure that depth-to-color mapping works properly, even if you play an XED clip on a machine without the identical Kinect sensor that recorded it.

Although one known issue has been resolved the release notes for V1.5.2 still has several issues listed for the previous version, including a prohibition on using the SkeletonFrame.TrackingMode property as it may change in future releases. A few new additions have appeared on the list of known issues so we can expect more bug-fixing updates to follow.

There is also a note that currently that you cannot build apps for .NET 4.5.  You can't help but wonder how much longer .NET will be supported. Microsoft doesn't seem very committed to all things .NET at the moment and native C++ seems to be in favor. Let us hope that lack of support for the laterst .NET framework is a short-lived glitch.
