Marshmallow Adoption Lamentably Slow

The latest statistics relating to Android Versions shows that while Lollipop is now only almost a third of devices, Marshmallow is on fewer than one in a hundred and that KitKat still dominates the Android landscape.

Should the fact that Marshmallow only has a 0.7% share of the pie be a cause for concern?  After all new Android versions traditionally make a slow start. Almost a  year ago we reported on the fact that fours months after launch Lollipop only had a 1.6% share and looking back to February 2014 the news was:

Since its launch over three months ago KitKat hasn't made much of an impact. It has now overtaken Froyo is terms of the number of devices using it - but only by half a percent.

Well, three months after its launch Marshmallow too is half a percent in advance of Froyo - but now Froyo is only on 0.2% of devices!

One thing that is clear from the statistics is that Android versions retain popularity over years rather than months. Jelly Bean, which has its heyday in 2013 in still on a quarter of devices. It probably won't be long before KitKat is overtaken by Lollipop - but don't expect KitKat to fade quickly.

Generally, is only when new devices with it pre-installed are launched that things start to pick up for a new version of Android. The new Nexus phones that were launched at the end of September were the first to be able to run Marshmallow and it is to be hoped that other manufacturers will soon  adopt this latest platform.
