Microsoft has announced the price of $3000 for the HoloLens Development Edition and is inviting devs in the US and Canada to apply for the chance to be able to purchase the first units.
Microsoft's demo of Project X-Ray, a mixed reality game designed to show off HoloLens games potential, certainly impressed attendees at the Microsoft event held yesterday in New York. Alien robo-scorpions burst from just ordinary walls and a single player armed with a holographic gauntlet simply moved around and to shoot them down.
Having enthused the audience with this display Terry Myerson announced: Starting today we are taking applications for the HoloLens Development Kit, which will be available in the first quarter of 2016 for $3,000. This too was greeted with applause, even though $3,000 may be a barrier to some segments of the potential developer market, especially as there is no indication of when it might become a consumer product. If you are keen to be among the first to get your hands on the the kit the first thing to do is sign up as a Windows Insider. Having done that, and only if you are in the United States (including Puerto Rico) and Canada, you can register your interest. At this point you don't need to give any payment details. Starting in January, accepted applicants will be invited to pre-order the Development Edition. The first devices will ship in the first quarter of 2016 and Microsoft stares: We will work to get devices out as quickly as possible. As soon as additional devices are available, more accepted applicants will be invited to purchase. Invitations may not arrive in the order in which applications were received. Devs can apply for up to two devices each. Microsoft has now selected the five recipients of the HoloLens Research grants of $100,000 and a pair of HoloLens Development kits but hasn't yet revealed who they are. They too will receive their kits in the first quarter of 2016.
