Microsoft has announced that Windows 10 is now running on 300 million active devices around the world. It has also announced that the free upgade offer will end on July 29th and that beyond that it will cost $119 to purchase Windows 10 Home.

Earlier this week in our article Will Windows 10 Achieve Its Billion Users?, Janet Swift speculated that Microsoft might extend the free upgrade to Windows 10 beyond the July deadline. This it now transpires was misguided.

So that there is no longer any doubt, Yusef Mehedi, Corporate Vice President of Microsoft's Windows and Devices Group has stated that:

The free upgrade offer will end on July 29.

After this time Windows 10 will continue to be "free" on new devices but if you just want an upgraded operating system a full version of Windows 10 Home for $119.

Mehedi claims that Windows 10 has the highest customer satisfaction of any version of Windows and says that more innovations are coming in the Windows 10 Anniversary Update. 

In addition to the headline claim that:

Windows 10 is now running on 300 million active devices around the world

Mehedi lists the following various milestones in Windows 10 adoption: 

• Over 63 billion minutes were spent on Microsoft Edge in March alone, with 50% growth in minutes since the last quarter. 
  
  
• Cortana, the personal digital assistant in Windows 10, has helped answer over 6 billion questions since launch.
  
  
• People are playing games on Windows 10 more than ever before, with over 9 billion hours of gameplay on Windows 10 since launch.
  
  
• Apps that come with Windows 10, including Photos, Groove Music, and Movies & TV are seeing millions of active users each month, including more than 144 million people using Photos.
  
  
• The Windows Store continues to grow daily with new Universal Windows Platform apps like Facebook, Instagram, and Facebook Messenger; updated UWP apps from Vine, Hulu, Netflix and Twitter; and popular PC games including Rise of the Tomb Raider and Quantum Break.

We were wrong to think that to attract more users Microsoft might extend the free upgrade. Are we wrong to think the 1 Billion users within the next couple of years is an ambitious target? Microsoft has now got three tenths of the way. There's still a long way to go - even more so if you are charging them.
