We have already reported on a similar time-limited half price offer, see Half Price Computer Science On Coursera For A Limitied Time, funded by Atlassian, the makers of popular software tools such as Bitbucket and JIRA. While this one saves you less it might have an equally big impact by allowing you discover features that support and promote learning.

Codecademy is an online interactive platform that offers completely free courses in a range of programming languages including Python, Java, PHP, JavaScript, Ruby, SQL, and Sass, as well as markup languages HTML and CSS. Some of these are for novice programmers, see four example our reviews of Java For Beginners, while others are at Intermediate level for those with some experience, such as this one on Angular JS:

As soon as you signup to Codecademy you can make a start on any of its courses and there is plenty of free material to keep you busy with courses having between 4 and 8 hour-long units. It also keeps you on a straight path as you have to complete each step before you can proceed to the next.

Now, however, there is an premium plan on offer. Codecademy Pro offers a personalized Learning Plan outlining key skills you should master. The idea is that you’ll be able to track your progress against this plan.

It also adds Quizzes, so that you have another way to test that you are ready to move on to the next module. and Projects to teach you how to apply what you’re learning in a hands-on, practical way. It also gives access to Advisors who can help via live chat from 8am to midnight EST if you encounter problems.

Pro is a subscription service costing $19.99 per month. There is a limited Free Trial to test the quiz from within any course and until 30th June you can sign up for 1 month for $9.99 with Atlassian covering the larger half of the cost.

If you want to continue for longer the price soon mounts up - for example 12 months would cost over $249. This still makes it cheaper than Pluralsight's new technology platform that also now offers directed learning paths. After the current 40% discount, a Pluralsight Plus individual subscription is $299 and its instant live mentoring is charged per use and access to Code School's interactive gamified content is also an extra subscription. While the Pluralsight plus Code School combination has a lot more material on offer, if Codecademy has a course you are interested in, now is a good time to try it out.

C23 ISO Standard Is Here But You Probably Won't Read It
06/11/2024

At last ISO C23 has been published, but at $250 you probably aren't going to read it. Can we really tolerate this sort of profiteering on the work of others? This is worse than academic publishing!
