| Admissions Open For Online CS Masters Degree |

The Georgia Tech Online Master of Science in Computer Science (OMS CS), being offered on the Udacity MOOC platform, is now accepting applications for Spring 2014 Semester. Numbers for this first presentation are limited and you need to satisfy the admission criteria. In May Georgia Tech, in collaboration with Udacity and AT&T, announced plans to offer a "massive online" MSc course that would cost less than $7,000 - a fraction of the cost of Georgia Tech’s on-campus program.
Since then details of the course content has been added to its website and now the short window for admission to the Pilot Program, starting in January 2014, has begun. Students who want to be part of the first cohort need to apply before October 27th and a note on the Udacity website warns:
Admissions are filled as qualified candidates are received and the program may fill up before the end of the admissions period. We encourage you to apply as soon as possible.
There is bound to be high demand for this Master's level MOOC, far exceeding the limit of 600 places (100 on each of the initial six courses on offer for the January 2014 semester), but the good news is that the course is expected to be offered three times per year and for future presentations there will be the option of taking its classes free of charge but without gaining an accredited Master's degree or with the option of gaining an alternative form of certification for those not eligible for formal admission to the program.
For those who want the formal qualification the cost, according to the Udacity website, will be $6,600 and the typical time to complete it will be about three years, although enrollments of up to six years will be permitted for students who need greater flexibility. Students who want the Masters Degree also have to satisfy the Georgia Tech admissions procedure. There's a $50 fee to apply and, while foreign students are eligible to apply subject to U.S export control policy, they will need to furnish credentials to prove prior qualifications in English.
According to the OMCS FAQs:
Preferred qualifications for admitted OMS CS students are an undergraduate degree in computer science or related field (typically mathematics, computer engineering or electrical engineering) from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher.
The FAQ's also state: Applicants who meet the minimum criteria will be conditionally admitted into the degree program and must pass their first two OMS CS foundational courses with a grade of B or better to be fully admitted. Students do not need to take these foundational courses before registering for elective courses, however students must take at least one foundational course per semester in which they are enrolled until they are fully admitted to Georgia Tech. All but one of the courses that start in January are foundational courses.
