A MicroMasters program focusing on the Internet of Things (I o T) on the edX platform starts on February 27th. To gain the credential, which comprises six courses, will take fourteen months and counts towards a Masters degree on-campus at Curtin University, Western Australia's largest university.
If you don't plan to study at Curtin University or have another need for a formal credential, you can audit any or all of the courses that make up the IoT Micro Masters for free - but in the case of IoT6x, the Capstone Project, you have to have completed all five of courses that lead up to it. Auditing gives complete access to all the course material, activities, tests, and forums but not a certificate. In this video introducing the series of courses, Professor Ian Murray, one of seven academics from Curtun University who are instructors for the series of courses, explains the Internet of Things as the connection of multiple devices while Ken Boal and Tom Goerke of Cisco describe what it will achieve as "instrumenting the world":
The premise for the series of course is that: The explosion of embedded and connected smart devices, systems and technologies in our lives has created an opportunity to connect every ‘thing’ to the internet. The resultant data collection and connectivity has created efficiencies and solutions previously dreamt up only in science fiction stories. This is disrupting and transforming every industry around the world. The !oT MicroMaster program is aimed at: Professionals from any field who want to leverage their existing business and/or technical knowledge across IoT-related functions in their workplace will learn exactly what IoT is, how it works, and how to harness its power to improve and streamline your business. The MicroMasters credential will provide 100 credits (25%) of the 400 credit Master of Engineering Science (Electrical Engineering) at Curtin University. You can save 10% if you enroll in the complete program of six courses up front. To audit the program for free you'll need to enroll separately in each course.
There are no prerequisites for its initial course Introduction to the Internet of Things (IoT), which starts on February 27 lasts 5 weeks and requires 2-3 hours per week. Taught by Professor Iain Murray and network specialist Nazanin Mohammadi it examines the concept of IoT, how the the "things" are connected and communicate and how they value add to the data generated. Participants will gain an understanding of what the IoT is and the requirements to design their own IoT solutions and start to develop IoT ideas in their own industries..
