The latest addition to Coursera's ever growing list of developer-related Specializations is on Agile Methods. Two of its four courses start today, including Managing an Agile Team which is a brand new course.

This specialization comes from the Batten Institute of the University of Virginia's Darden School of Business. It consists of four courses plus a Capstone project and is at Beginner level.

According to the Specialization's description:

you'll gain an understanding and appreciation of the principles and practice of agile management. You'll learn to coordinate all aspects of the agile development process, including running design sprints, managing teams, and fostering a culture of experimentation. In the final Capstone Project, you'll apply what you've learned to guide a real-world software development project to successful completion.

The four courses are:

  1. Getting Started: Agile Meets Design Thinking
    (5 weeks 3 - 4 hours/week, starts May 23)

  2. Running Valuable Design Sprints
    (5 weeks 3 - 4 hours/week, starts May 30)

  3. Managing an Agile Team
    (4 weeks 3 - 4 hours/week, starts May 23)

  4. Running Experiments with Agile

In order to gain the Specialization Certificate you need to purchase and complete all four courses, which are repeated at regular intervals and then the Capstone, which is due to be available in June. There is a discount for pre-payment for the whole package. If you want to follow the materials without access to graded items you can enroll in each individual course for free by choosing the Audit only option.

I was alerted to Managing an Agile Team thanks to a new MOOC resource created by Vivien Tran-Thien for finding new courses among the many re-runs that start each month. Announcing the new webpage, New online courses announced in the last 31 days to the Facebook MOOC Addicts Group she explains:

As an enthusiastic online learner, I try to keep track of new MOOCs in the domains I'm most interested in. Unfortunately enough, the search engines of the various MOOC providers are inadequate for this purpose. For example, Coursera and edX don't have a "just announced" category in their catalogs. I'm not convinced by the solution offered by websites like Class Central because it isn't possible to filter by provider or sort by the announcement date. At the end of the day, I ended up browsing over and over through the same lists of MOOCs.

The features of the webpage she created to remedy these shortcomings are:

  • A list of the MOOCs announced in the last 31 days by major MOOC providers (Coursera, edX, FUN, FutureLearn, Udacity)

  • Filter by one or more subjects, one or more languages and/or one or more providers

  • After having applied some filters, you can bookmark the page. When you come back on this page, the filters will still be on [this doesn't work on old browsers like IE9]

  • Sort the MOOCs by announcement date or start date

If you are troubled by the sense of deja vu you experience when looking for new MOOCs try it out.
