Udacity's latest new Nanodegree gives programmers the opportunity to master the blockchain development skills that are in high demand across industries, and at companies ranging from startups to large, established organizations.

In the blog post introducing the new Blockchain Nanodegree Program, Roshni Jain, Udacity's Director of Learning Products points out that expertise in blockchain is in high demand with fourteen available position available and offers high salaries, quoting the fact:

“The median income for full-time blockchain developers in the U.S. is $140,000 a year, compared to general software developers, whose annual median pay is $105,000.”

Blockchain is about more than Bitcoin of course and Jain notes that Robert Opp, Director of Innovation and Change Management for the World Food Programme, has highlighted how the technology can be beneficial and used "for good":

“Through blockchain, we aim to cut payment costs, better protect beneficiary data, control financial risks, and respond more rapidly in the wake of emergencies. Using blockchain can be a qualitative leap – not only for the World Food Programme, but for the entire humanitarian community.”

Udacity's promo video for its Blockchain Nanodegree gives other reasons for wanting to get to grips with this disruptive technology:

The curriculum has been designed in collaboration with working blockchain developers drawing on exclusive insights from some of the leading voices in the blockchain space, including:

  • Balaji Srinivasan, CTO of Coinbase
  • David Johnston, Chairman of the Board of Factom
  • Aaron Brown, VP of Engineering at Madnetworks
  • Elena Nadolinski, Solidity Engineer, Co-Creator of Ethmoji.io.
  • PK Rasam, Founder and Chief Blockchain Officer at LINCD

The program is comprised of two terms of three months each each of which cost $999. In both of them you can expect plenty of hand-on experience as you complete projects.

In Term 1: Fundamentals there are five projects:

  • Managing your blockchain identity
  • Creating your own private blockchain
  • Private blockchain web service API
  • Build A Private Blockchain Notary Service
  • Build A Notarization API With Ethereum Blockchain

In Term 2: Architecture and Applications, students begin working with blockchain architecture, and focus on solving a supply chain problem set before learning to start layering blockchain services with legacy integration. There are projects for each of these three areas, the final one being the Capstone project in which  you are tasked with developing your own blockchain solution to solve a supply chain problem.

During the course students will have the opportunity to engage in weekly office hours with experts working in the world of blockchain which will keep them up-to-date with the latest innovations.

The program starts for its first run on July 10, 2018 and registration is already open. Students should be comfortable with object-oriented programming, and developing web apps in Javascript before embarking on it.
