Bing Maps Improves BirdsEye Presentation

There's an updated version of the Bing Maps Web Control with a number of new features. The developers describe the additions as 'smaller but highly requested'.

The Bing Maps v8 control lets you add maps to your applications and display data with a spatial element.

The first change that has been made to the new version is the ability to choose Bird's Eye imagery from the map type dropdown. Bird’s eye imagery has been available in the Bing Maps V8 Web Control since May, but it could only be displayed programmatically. This option will only be offered on locations that have Bird's eye imagery; if it's not available, the option will be greyed out.

The next improvement to Bing Maps is the ability to limit which countries are offered in the Autosuggest suggestions. You can now specify a country to limit what addresses are suggested, so the suggestions will all be in the country you specify using an ISO country region code.

The third addition is the enabling of Cross Resource Sharing (COR) on tile layers, as well as on the base map tiles. CORs is a mechanism that allows restricted resources on a web page to be requested from another domain outside the domain from which the first resource was served. It used to work fine in the previous version of the Bing Map control, but the way Bing Maps v8 has handled tiles up till now has caused CORS errors for sporadic tiles in Chrome, Edge, and Firefox.  The improvement means that you should now be able to access the pixel data of the map canvas without any browser security issues.

Other improvements include the ability to limit which toolbar options appear in the drawing toolbar; better event support by the GeoXmlLayer class; and the ability to access the pushpins of all waypoints rendered by the directions manager so you can customize their look and feel or add events to them.
