The 8th annual Google Code-in contest in which teenage students learn about open source and make practical contributions turned out to be "epic" - with 3555 students from 78 countries completing 16468 tasks for the 25 participating open source organizations.

The Google Open Source Team has now posted the list of the Grand Prize winners of Google Code-In 2017, two from each of the open source organizations involved in the event. These students get a four-day trip to Google’s campus in northern California to meet with Google engineers, meet with one of the mentors they worked with during the seven weeks of the contest, and "enjoy some fun in the California sun" with the other winners.

Recognizing the importance of mentors on the Google Open Source blog, Stephanie Taylor writes:

Our 730+ mentors, the heart and soul of GCI, are the reason the contest thrives. Mentors volunteer their time to help these bright students become open source contributors. Mentors spend hundreds of hours during their holiday breaks answering questions, reviewing submitted tasks, and welcoming the students to their communities. GCI would not be possible without their patience and tireless efforts.

Regarding the outcome of the 2017 contest, Taylor commented:
We saw immense growth this year, the seventh year of the contest, both in the number of students participating and the number of countries represented by these students.

By the time the winners were announced the total number of students for this year had risen to 3555, with an average number of completed tasks per student being 4.6. The Google Code-In site has information about the tasks student were allocated and that were completed.

Between them the 50 Grand Prize Winners completed 1,739 tasks (an average of almost 35) while also helping other students. Sixteen of these teenagers come from India, 12 are from the USA and 6 from Poland. the UK and Canada are represented by three winners, Indonesia, Vietnam and Singapore by two winners with one each from Sri Lanaka, Ukraine, Mauritius and China.

Another 75 finalists, three from each mentoring organization, will receive a special hoodie to commemorate their achievements in the contest. They come from 20 countries.
