OpenAI is currently accepting applications for the next cohort of OpenAI Fellows, a program which offers 6-month apprenticeships in AI research at OpenAI to those who do not have a formal background in the field. As we reported in AI Goes Open Source To The Tune Of $1 Billion OpenAI is the non-profit artificial intelligence research company founded in 2015 that aims to promote and develop beneficial AI. Although Elon Musk resigned from its board earlier this year due to conflict of interest he continues to back it financially and it continues to attract new high-profile donors. As it increases the number and range of projects it is working on, OpenAI always appears to have job openings and it also has three distinct work experience opportunities one of which is the OpenAI Fellows program, which is for people who want to want to be AI researchers and have previously demonstrated excellence in another field. This is a 6-month program Individuals work with a mentor in one of OpenAI's research teams on topics like multi-agent reinforcement learning, generative models and robotics. The initial 2-month period is devoted to background learning, exploration and working on a research proposal followed by 4 months of working on the research project.
Applications are currently being accepted for up to six Fellows who will work at OpenAI's San Francisco offices for six months starting in September and will be compensated "at the level of selective Bay Area software internships". The program is targeted at: people who want to be an AI researcher, but do not have a formal background in the field. OpenAI's job site suggests that qualities they are looking for include:

Those interested are encouraged to apply as soon as possible as the application period may close before the deadline of July 8th at 12AM PST.
The rubric also states: If you’re in the middle of a degree program, please apply for an internship instead. The third way to get involved with OpenAI is as an OpenAI Scholar. Under this program OpenAI is providing 6-10 stipends and mentorship to individuals from underrepresented groups to study deep learning full-time for 3 months and open-source a project. This is a remote program and is open to anyone with US work authorization located in US timezones. In return, scholars are asked to document their experiences of studying deep learning and hopefully inspire others to do the same.
