Chatbots used to be the stuff of science fiction. Now they are increasingly part and parcel of the everyday world, both at home and in commerce. Love them or loathe them they are here to stay.

The team from 16best.net has produced an infographic that sums up the current state of the chatbot market and considers the role of chatbots in the future of customer service,

Predicting remarkable growth in the global chatbot market, the infographic also notes that the well-known futurist Ray Kurzweil claims that chatbots will become indistinguishable from humans by 2029.

The timeline shows how chatbots developed since Alan Turing devised the Turing Test, bringing us to today's crop of voice activated personal assistants:

Although only a minority of people believe chatbots will replace their human counterparts completely, already 48% of consumers would rather connect with a company via live chat rather than by any other means and 40% of consumers don't care whether a chatbot or a "real human" helps them as long as they are getting the help they need.

The infographic also sheds light on what Alexa really does, but notice that it misses out Tell a Joke and Provide the Weather Forecast which come high in the list of requested actions.

According to the infographic 54% of developers worldwide worked on chatbots for the first time in 2016. Given how important chatbots are going to become in the future, they are a pltform you can't afford to ignore.
